New research has identified a build-up of a protein called gamma synuclein at a specific site in the optic nerve head of mice losing sight with glaucoma.
The protein is similar to one found in Parkinson's patients and appears to be a result of neuronal breakdown, according to study report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The specific location of build-up in the nerve head led senior study author Dr Nicholas Marsh-Armstrong of Kennedy Krieger Institute to state: 'I believe these findings put us on the cusp of discovering a treatment for glaucoma that may also have relevance for a number of other neurodegenerative diseases.'
