A root and branch review of operations at City University's Fight For Sight Eye Clinic has resulted in a number of voluntary redundancies.
The London-based university did not disclose how many members of staff had taken a voluntary redundancy package after restructuring and grade realignment at the clinic.
Changes include the appointment of an academic lead with overall responsibility for the running of the eye clinic. This, it said, fitted with a commitment to provide 'academic excellence for business and the profession'.
There was also an assessment of grades and pay scales to put them in line with the rest of the university and industry standards, a City spokesperson said. 'As a result of the restructuring and grade realignment some staff opted to take voluntary redundancy packages instead of joining the new structure,' he added.
City was aiming to reach the top 2 per cent of universities in the world, and was to invest £200m in 'research-excellent academic staff'. Investments would include an upgrade of the facilities available for students at the Fight For Sight clinic, located on Bath Street.
'This investment keeps the clinic in line with the latest industry innovations and helps us to continue to produce commercially attractive and academically excellent students,' a statement added. 'We believe that the changes that we have made will not only improve the experience and academic benefit to our students but also improve the clinic's quality of service to our patients from an already high base.'
City was unable to confirm how many staff remained at the clinic following the redundancies.
