
Eye health should be reframed as a development issue, according to the Lancet Global Health Commission’s Global Eye Health: Vision beyond 2020 report.
The commission looked at lessons from over two decades and presented evidence for the life-transforming impact of eye care in order to inform governments about the future of eye health.
Among the report’s key messages was the need to reframe eye health as ‘an enabling, cross-cutting issue within the sustainable development framework.’
It said there was extensive evidence that showed improved eye health contributed directly and indirectly to reducing poverty, as well as improving general and mental health.
