Researchers investigate how each cell type within the retina responds to diabetes

Researchers at Queen’s University in Belfast will for the first time be investigating how each cell type within the retina responds to diabetes.

The study was announced by Fight for Sight to mark National Eye Health Week 2018.

The team will use an approach known as ‘single cell RNA sequencing’ that enables them to better understand the genes present in retinal tissue cells.

The charity says previous attempts have been broadly unsuccessful at assessing how each of the multiple cell types in the retina is impacted by diabetes.

It is hoped the new study will open the door to new treatments for the condition, which could affect 144,000 in the UK.
