Researchers back smart CLs

Smart contact lenses that could help diabetic patients measure and check glucose levels in the future have been backed in a study published by Science Advances.

Researchers from Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) and Sungkyunkwan University, in South Korea, tested a smart contact lens to monitor glucose levels in tears in rabbits with no obvious side effects.

‘We report an unconventional approach for the fabrication of a soft, smart contact lens in which glucose sensors, wireless power transfer circuits, and display pixels to visualise sensing signals in real time are fully integrated using transparent and stretchable nanostructures,’ reported investigators.
