Researchers develop ‘autofocal’ spectacles which adjust power using eye tracking technology

Researchers at Stanford University have developed ‘autofocal’ spectacles which adjust power using eye tracking technology.

The prototype spectacles use fluid-filled lenses that bulge and thin according to data from eye tracking and depth sensors triangulate where a person is looking and determines the precise distance of the object of interest.

The researchers evaluated the spectacles on visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and a refocusing tasks in 19 users. ‘Autofocals exhibit better visual acuity when compared to monovision and progressive lenses while maintaining similar contrast sensitivity,’ said scientists.
‘On the refocusing task, autofocals are faster and, compared to progressives, also significantly more accurate,’ they added.
