Australian researchers have created a one-step test that uses holograms which they claim will help optometrists to measure astigmatism more quickly and more accurately.

The technique has been developed by optical physicists Dr Kodikullam and Dr Chitralekha Avudainayagam from the University of New South Wales. It is based on earlier research using a single hologram to measure the eye's spherical refractive error.

In the new test, a hologram portrays a range of 3D sunburst images simultaneously to the patient. Each sunburst image emulates different lenses to replace the need to trial different correcting lenses.

The patient indicates which sunburst appears the clearest, and the optometrist can determine the prescription, avoiding the chart on the wall method. Dr Kodikullam Avudainayagam adds that the hologram method has already been tested on patients as part of another experiment involving a different focusing problem.
