Retina study aims to identify heart disease

Study looks at whether a scan of blood vessels can identify heart disease

Details of a new study looking to determine whether a scan of blood vessels in the eye can identify heart disease were announced by the University of Edinburgh earlier this week.

More than 1,000 patients with suspected heart disease will have high definition scans for indications such as changes to width or unusual branching in blood vessels, which may be linked with heart disease. The study's aim is to lead to the avoidance of invasive procedures such as biopsies and angiograms, where catheters are used to identify vessel and organ damage.

The project will be led by the University of Edinburgh's Clinical Research Imaging Centre (CRIC) in collaboration with the University of Dundee, NHS Lothian's Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, NHS Tayside's Ninewells Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital London.
