The success of retinal gene therapy for Leber’s congenital amaurosis patients was assessed by researchers using a multimodal imaging approach in a study published in the Science Translational Medicine journal this month.

Findings suggested that visual experience, enhanced by gene therapy, may be responsible for the re-organisation and maturation of synaptic connectivity in the visual pathways of the brain for those treated. The results were compared to the untreated eye of LCA patients.
