Retinal implant UK trial

Bionic vision system gets regulatory approval

Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency approval for a Moorfields-led UK clinical trial of a new retinal implant has been awarded to Pixium Vision.

The trial, for patients who have lost sight due to retinitis pigmentosa (RP), will use the Iris II bionic vision system that includes a mini bio-inspired camera and a 150 electrode epi-retinal implant, which could potentially enable patients who have lost their vision to perceive objects by recognising their size, position, orientation and movement. The implant includes an explantable design that reduces the risk of retinal damage and allows upgrades to new therapy options in future.
