Retinoblastoma deaths’ low income disparity

Children with eye cancer in low-income countries 16 times more likely to die

A study found children living with retinoblastoma in a low-income country were at a 16 times higher risk of dying within three years than those in high-income countries.

Researchers found the risk in high-income countries has dropped dramatically over the past few decades with deaths now rare.

It found 40% of children in low-income countries die within three years of diagnosis compared to 1% in high-income countries.

The research, which was published in The Lancet Global Health, was led by the International Centre for Eye Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
