Review of uveitis highlights lack of awareness

New guidance has been developed by a team at the University of Bristol to help diagnose and treat uveitis more effectively.

Researchers said the inflammatory disease was largely unrecognised by the general public and was sometimes overlooked within the wider medical community.

A review, published in the Jama Journal, was conducted to shed light on the causes, symptoms and advances in treatment alongside a call for earlier diagnosis and intervention.

Dr Panayiotis Maghsoudlou, the lead author of the study, said: ‘Uveitis is often detected too late, by which point irreversible damage may already have occurred. It is vital that people experiencing persistent eye pain, redness, sensitivity to light, new floaters, blurred vision, or sudden changes in sight seek urgent medical attention. Early intervention can significantly improve outcomes and, in many cases, prevent permanent sight loss.’
