Revised guidance from the College of Optometrists and ABDO on the supervision and general direction of contact lens sales was due to be published as Optician went to press.
Rules surrounding the sale and supply of contact lenses were brought to the GOC's attention last November to address the growing number non-optical suppliers of plano contact lenses such as internet firms and pharmacies.
Announcing the review, the GOC said it would work with the College and ABDO to ensure that the guidance to the professions addressed what would be expected of a practitioner in this context.
Profession insiders and the BCLA had voiced concerns that plano lenses could be supplied as a legal supervised sale without a fitting or eye examination under the existing guidelines.
When published, the revised guidance should clarify how practioners should interpret amendments to Section 60 of the Opticians Act which governs the sale and supply of contact lenses.
The revised guidance will go before the GOC's Standards Committee. The GOC told Optician: 'The GOC reserves the right to incorporate its own guidance if deemed necessary.'
The BCLA said this week it will host an event in March for members to discuss the latest interpretation of the Section 60 laws on contact lens sale and supply, with speakers from the three optical bodies.
