RNIB employee competes in BBC One travel show

A sight-impaired Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) employee took part in series three of BBC One’s Bafta-award winning Race Across the World.

Tricia Sail, a community connections co-ordinator in Devon, hoped her appearance on the travel programme would encourage others living with sight loss to take on their own challenges.

Sail, who lived with uveitis and was registered as severely sight-impaired, appeared on the show with her fully sighted friend Cathie.

‘I have known Cathie since we were 13. I watched the first two series and thought that looked like such fun. I messaged Cathie and encouraged her to apply, so I think initially she wasn’t sure what she had signed up for, but after she found out more about it she was really excited to be involved,’ Sail said.

They competed against five others pairs in a 16,000km journey across Canada, starting at Vancouver in the west and finishing at the easternmost city of St John’s in Newfoundland.

Competing pairs have to undertake the journey without smartphones and internet access, and with a limited cash budget of the airfare for the route but were not allowed to fly.
