A training DVD to provide optometrists and dispensing opticians with the skills to treat patients with learning disabilities has been developed by the Royal National Institute of Blind People.
The Bridge to Vision training, accredited by the General Optical Council, was developed following feedback from optometrists who often reported struggling to test the vision of patients with learning difficulties.
The RNIB added that problems faced included patients not being able to read the test chart letters or having little or no speech. The training explained alternative testing methods and what should be taken into consideration when dispensing and making clinical decisions, for example cycloplegic versus non-cycloplegic retinopathy. Other advice included how best to communicate and approach the eye test and fitting of glasses.
