RNIB responds over safeguarding concerns at residential centre

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) has said it is ‘doing absolutely everything it can’ while working in tandem with Ofsted following allegations that the charity failed to address safeguarding concerns at one of its residential centres.

The Charity Commission began an investigation into the Pears Centre, Coventry, in March after several serious incidents over the course of last year were reported. In addition, the commission was notified of intended action by Ofsted, which proposed to cancel the RNIB’s registration to run the centre.

The RNIB said it had put an independent project manager in place to make urgent changes at the centre and a new team of senior leaders that would be overseen by chair Eleanor Southwood and a new interim chief executive following the departure of Sally Harvey, who resigned earlier this month following the allegations.
