Safety push for older drivers

The AA Charitable Trust urged older drivers to talk to their healthcare providers about continuing to drive in a warning that marked International Day of Older Persons (October 1).

The trust wants older drivers to speak to their doctor, pharmacist or optician if they are unsure about a prescription's effect and to make sure they ask whether any conditions or changes in their health meant they should stop driving.

AA/Populus research found that 62 per cent of over 55s agreed that having a car was extremely important for people in their 70s and 80s who were still driving. It found that 71 per cent of drivers worried about the safety of people in their 70s or 80s who were still driving and pointed out that there were now more than 1 million drivers in the UK aged over 80. With an ageing population this was going to increase.
