Saggers, who has been in the post for the past three years, runs the in-house facilities team at Horizon, a company with 60 staff. Duties include personnel, health and safety, recruitment, auditing and upkeep of ISO9001:2000 registration and finance.

Saggers said that she wasn't easily convinced to move into optics, having previously worked at Whitbread as a contracted facilities manager. 'It took Len about three years to persuade me to move. This was not necessarily because I don't find it interesting, but more because the skills I was bringing were that of a larger corporate background, and I was unsure how they would translate to a small company environment,' she added.
