Free eye tests for all in Scotland have boosted the country's economy by £440m per year and should be implemented in the rest of the UK, according to a report.
The report commissioned by the Association of Optometrists, called The Economic Impact of Free Eye Examinations in Scotland, revealed an uplift in the numbers of eye problems detected and treated since Scotland's policy was rolled out in 2006.
An additional 285,000 people per year have had their eyes examined since the new eye policy was introduced, the report found, with 2,600 having previously undetected eye conditions diagnosed and 1,900 getting conditions remedied.
