Optometry Scotland is urging the Scottish Government Health Directorate to link Scottish optometrists to NHS net.

Optician understands that the optical body is now awaiting official approval to its proposal. Access to NHS net would enable practitioners to refer to GPs and ophthalmologists via email including forwarding pictures in a secure way. A system to allow e-referrals could go live by 2011 if the optical body is successful.

Optometric practices in England have not been included in the national NHS IT programme, despite lobbying by the sector.
