A man who lost the use of an eye during the blitz has had his sight restored 66 years later thanks to the diligence of Scottish optometrist Frank Munro.

John Gray lost the use of his right eye during a Luftwaffe bombing raid on Clydeside in 1941, when on duty as a firewatcher. Buried alive for eight hours in the rubble of a building, he was rescued with a severe injuries including damage to his right eye. Gray was told by doctors at the time that he would never see through the eye again.

However, his optometrist Munro, who is currently the vice chair of Optometry Scotland, realised that all the damage was to Gray's lens, the retina itself was healthy.
