Self-driving car tested

Eye health

A legally blind driver has successfully completed the first guided journey of a new self-driving car.

Steve Mahan, who has lost 95 per cent of his vision, drove around his local neighbourhood in a technical experiment by developers Google. He stopped off at a drive-through and to collect his dry cleaning along the way. The steering wheel on the Toyota Prius turned on its own, with the car controlled using radar and laser sensors.

‘Where this would change my life is to give me the independence of going to the places I want to go and need to go when I need to do these things,’ said Mahan.

A video of the experiment can be viewed on YouTube.
