Shake-up for pre-reg year

Pre-registration year written exams are to be scrapped, students supported more and logbooks introduced in an effort to make the pre-reg year more effective in equipping practitioners with the skills needed for modern optometric practice.

The College of Optometrists has announced details of the new scheme for registration to the profession after lengthy consultation with optometric bodies and the GOC.
Students will see changes to the pre-reg year as early as next summer when a 'live pilot' of the changes will run.
Students will be allocated a College adviser who will work closely with the student's supervisor throughout the pre-reg year. Final exams will be replaced with a one-day practical-only final assessment. Students will be issued with a logbook which has already been piloted by the College.
The employers' body, FODO, which has expressed concerns about the speed of change, said that employers and supervisors needed time to prepare but agreed the system should go live in 2005.
College chief executive Bryony Pawinska said the changes echoed worldwide change to competence-based assessment. A more formal structure would leave professionals better equipped to enter the profession, she said.
