A service in which diabetes tests are conducted in high street practices with the results being sent to GPs and the charity Diabetes UK was discussed by the public bill committee studying the Health and Social Care Bill (News 26.01.11).

Sir Stephen Bubb, chief executive of the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations, told the committee it would be interesting to explore such a service. He said this was because diabetes 'is not often dealt with medically but is best dealt with by organisations that can work on exercise and diet'. He revealed that Specsavers and Diabetes UK have already explored the service.
