A template has been drawn up by UK Vision Strategy to encourage Health and Wellbeing Boards to commission eye care services effectively.
Causes of sight loss including age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract and diabetic retinopathy were covered by the template.
Anita Lightstone, UK Vision Strategy programme director, said: 'Due to demographic change, demands on eye care are predicted to rise dramatically over the next few years. By ensuring good service provision, we can reduce the impact of this both for the individual and society.
'This template tool will enable Health and Wellbeing Boards to address this growing need and ensure eye health is prioritised for the benefit of patients.'
