When performing an eye examination on 68-year-old Brenda Cox at Specsavers in Tottenham Court Road, optometrist Afroditi Sideropoulou discovered that the pensioner was haemorrhaging in her left eye and referred her to London's Moorfields Eye Hospital.
Cox was found to have developed central retinal vein occlusion. Her vision was saved by aspirin prescribed by the ophthalmologist. Cox said: 'I am extremely grateful to Afroditi at Specsavers for keeping me calm and reassured. She even phoned my home the following day to make sure I visited my doctor. She went above and beyond her role as an optician.'
