Specsavers shared the story of how an optometrist detected signs of a tumour behind the optic nerve of a 14-year-old girl as part of National Eye Health Week (September 21-27).
The patient, Beth McKendrick, attended a routine sight test in 2017 at Specsavers Hamilton after her mum suspected Beth could need a new prescription because she had experienced headaches.
McKendrick was referred to hospital where an MRI scan confirmed there was a tumour resting on the optic nerve. She received successful chemotherapy treatment and now has scans every three months.
Emma Foster, store director at Specsavers Hamilton, said: ‘We’re telling Beth’s story as, although it is rare, it is an example of how vital it is to go for a regular eye tests as they can detect signs of health conditions like Beth’s tumour.’
