Julie Jenner of Sightsavers (pictured) has returned home from a milestone visit to Africa where the charity gave out its 250 millionth treatment for onchocerciasis, or river blindness.
Tottenham Hotspur player Benoît Assou-Ekotto (background) also joined the trip to his home country Cameroon, West Africa, to support the programme.
The landmark Mectizan treatment was given to six-year-old Nahbila, whose grandmother Julianna has been blind from river blindness for 16 years. ‘I am very grateful that Nahbila will take the Mectizan treatment so she won’t suffer in the same way as I have,’ Julianna said.
