Peter Coe, registrar of the GOC, signalled the idea earlier this month, and said there would be a focus on 'what's a point worth', and specialisation of credits.
He said at the moment there was an assumption that a point was worth about an hour's CET study, but there was already an acknowledgement that the system needed to be more sophisticated in future.
'We'll see the identification of a Òlearning outcomeÓ, which the organiser of the course will be able to demonstrate up front,' predicted Coe.
'It might be the case in future that some courses will deliver three points in an hour, but in other courses you get one point from three hours.'
He forecast that practitioners would one day be required to achieve the minimum number of points for registration via a number of themed clinical specialties, such as cataract post-operative care and cosmetic lenses.
