A fundraising effort by Specsavers stores in the UK has helped millions of people in Zambia with visual difficulties. Specsavers staff and its customers raised more than £300,000, which the company has used to build a school for optometry in the country's capital, Lusaka.

In conjunction with Vision Aid Overseas, Specsavers also built two vision centres in the central and Luapula provinces.

The teaching facility was opened by Specsavers founder, Dame Mary Perkins, who said: 'This is a critical facility which will help transform the lives of people living in Zambia who have vision difficulties. Specsavers will work hard to raise a further £300,000 and I personally guarantee the whole of Zambia will have access to eye care by 2015.'
