One further area of confusion from Monday's meeting to clarify the Section 60 changes to the Optician Act surrounded legislation on the sale of protective and sports eyewear.

Contrary to some people's belief this section of the Act had not been fully enacted and would require an order of the Privy Council. No such order had yet been made and until it had the sale of sports and protective eyewear should be made in the same way as other spectacles.

'Some people may have thought that sports eyewear was excluded from supervision,' said a GOC spokeswoman. 'What we are saying is that it is not excluded.'
