Step by step to sustainability

Eyespace Eyewear hosted its inaugural sustainability webinar last week

Eyespace Eyewear hosted its inaugural sustainability webinar last week on January 19. The one hour event took place in the evening and saw staff from the company explain the sustainable steps Eyespace has taken to improve its eco credentials.

Founder and CEO, Jayne Abel, took the first half of the session and covered the core initiatives that the company had taken across its locations.

She began by thanking attendees for their interest in the vital subject of sustainability before giving some advice: ‘I highly recommend that all optical businesses nominate an optical champion to discuss and bring together new initiatives for sustainability.

‘Once you have a champion nominated, the best place to aim for is marginal gains.’

Abel’s examples of marginal gains at Eyespace were the company’s issuing of reusable water bottles to all staff and ordering foldable cases to save space in freight, which she said made ‘a significant saving’ to cost and carbon footprint.

Abel was followed by product manager Emily Andrews, product manager at Eyespace. Andrews gave a round-up of the sustainable qualities of different sustainable materials and highlighted the pros and cons of each.

Andrews highlighted the sustainable steps Eyespace had taken with its eyewear collections, including sourcing recycled stainless steel and injection molded recycled ocean plastic.
