Student optometrist warned after nightclub brawl

Student OO Suraj Rana has been given a warning by a General Optical Council fitness to practise committee after he pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm in June 2013.

The committee heard that Rana was involved in a brawl after being ejected from a Birmingham nightclub following a dance floor scuffle. Two complainants waited outside the venue and ‘squared up’ to the registrant when he was being escorted out. One of the complainants then punched Rana, who threw two punches in response and a fight then ensured.

Rana was given a suspended 15-month prison sentence for his part in the fight. The committee heard that the judge said his acts were impulsive and fuelled by drink, but that he was of spotless good character and a responsible person.
