Retinal imaging firm Optos has flagged up a study backing the use of its devices to monitor diabetic patients.
The company said a study showed its ultra-widefield non-dilated Optomap images compared favourably with dilated early treatment diabetic retinopathy study (ETDRS) photos and dilated retinal examination in determining clinical severity of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular oedema.
Dr Lloyd Paul Aiello and colleagues at Joslin's Beetham Eye Institute compared photos in 103 patients with various severity levels of diabetic retinopathy.
The two imaging modalities exactly matched for clinical level of diabetic retinopathy in 84 per cent of patients and were within one level of agreement in 91 per cent, Optos reported.
Sensitivity and specificity of ultra-widefield images for detecting the presence or absence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) diagnosed were 99 and 100 per cent respectively. The study was published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology.
