Study finds stroke link

A large population-based study has linked subconjunctival haemorrhage with stroke.

A Taiwanese health insurance database of over 100,000 patients has been analysed of whom 17,349 are known to have had at least one incident of subconjunctival haemorrhage. Each of these individuals was tracked over three years, and 2.44 per 100 were found to have gone on to suffer a stroke as compared with 1.63 per 100 in the non-haemorrhage group.

After adjustment for risk factors, such as hypertension, diabetes and so on, a statistically significant hazard ratio for stroke was found.
