Study reveals optimum CD value of 61mm

A centration distance (CD) of 61mm would be universally suitable for the majority of male and female presbyopic users of ready-made spectacles in the UK, found a soon to be published study.

An investigation by Dr Jonathan Pointer was based on an analysis of the near pupillary distance of almost 1,400 adults. Dr Pointer said the findings would be published in the College of Optometry's peer-reviewed journal Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics later this summer.

It follows a report in this month's Optometry and Vision Science that nearly half of ready-made spectacles on sale in the UK failed to meet safety standards (News 27.04.12).

The report suggested inappropriately high CDs were being used by RMS manufacturers.
