​Researchers report successful implantation of prosthetic films in monkeys

Researchers in Okayama University in Japan have reported the successful implantation of dye-based prosthetic films in monkey eyes.

This suggests the implantation’s surgical feasibility and could represent a step towards the development of a treatment for patients with macular degeneration or retinitis pigmentosa, they said.

Implants were made of a material based on photoelectric dye molecules able to convert light into electric potentials, and mimic phototransduction.
