​Two patients who received new stem cell treatment for AMD regain sight

Two patients who received a new stem cell treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) have regained their sight.

A trial at Moorfields Eye Hospital sought whether the diseased cells at the back of the patients’ affected eye could be improved by using a stem cell based patch.

The two patients, a man in his 80s and a woman in her 60s, had a severe form of wet AMD and suffered from rapidly declining vision. One year after the trial, the subjects went from not being able to read at all to reading between 60 and 80 words a minute with normal reading glasses.
