To mark International Sunglasses Day, which took place on June 27, Specsavers encouraged people to check if their sunglasses were offering the levels of protection they require.
The multiple said its public health message in Macular Week and International Sunglasses Day was that prolonged exposure of the eyes to UV was linked to cataracts, macular degeneration and some types of eye cancer.
Specsavers clinical spokesperson Dr Nigel Best said: ‘Check for a CE (European Community Standard), BSEN1836 (British Standard) or UV400 markings and aim for a pair that offer 80% light reduction.’
