Suspension for fraud suspect

Fitness to practice

A dispensing optician accused of fraud has had his 18-month interim suspension order extended until June 2012 by the GOC's fitness to practise committee.

The GOC said it was necessary for the protection of the public and was in the wider public interest for the interim order to remain in place.

Along with ophthalmic medical practitioner Dr Helen James, Iqbal Nabi faces charges related to NHS-funded sight tests (News 08.04.11). He pleaded not guilty to the charges last July, while James pleaded guilty.

A pre-trial hearing will take place on 19 May, with the trial scheduled for June.
