Tesco capitalises on free eye exam offer

Retail behemoth Tesco has opened its 200th optical practice since entering the sector in 1998 - reporting a surge of visits since offering free eye tests.

The supermarket announced the landmark on Twitter last week, having opened a new practice in Hungary. It was in addition to 178 Tesco Opticians in the UK and 21 overseas practices in far-flung destinations including Thailand.

Tesco also said sight test numbers had grown 40 per cent since it started offering them free in March 2010. The tests are not conditional on purchasing spectacles or contact lenses. Independent optometrists have condemned the use of free eye tests, which were described as 'corrosive' at the Independents Day event this month.
