As part of its strategy to gain market share from competitors, Tesco is claiming its prices for prescription frames and glazing are the lowest on the market.
Tesco says its starting price of £20 for complete spectacles far undercuts that of its rivals and scratch-resistant coating is included in the price.
According to the supermarket, the same package in Specsavers would cost £37, while Asda charges £44.60.
The announcement came as part of Tesco Optical's 10th anniversary celebrations and the retailer also revealed that the starting price for its prescription glasses has fallen by 20 per cent since it first began providing GOS. In 1998 the price of prescription glasses from Tesco Optical was £24.95.
In addition, the supermarket disclosed that it is trialling Optomap retinal screening in five of its practices, with each examination costing £10.
Tesco has also formally confirmed its intention to double the number of in-store practices from 70 to 140 over the next year, creating 500 new jobs as reported in Optician on January 25 2008.
