The Eye Health Alliance has backed an RAC Foundation report which found that older drivers pose no greater risk to road safety than younger drivers and therefore should not be forced to retake a test.

The Alliance asserted that good vision is important for drivers of all ages and urged the government to introduce a more scientific screening system to ensure drivers' vision is tested every 10 years.

'Requiring all drivers to have regular eye checks throughout their driving careers will mean that eyesight problems are picked up and treated early and ensure that as drivers get older their eyesight is preserved for longer,' said Heather Marshall, spokesperson for the Alliance.
