
Thyroid eye disease has been shown to cause negative impacts on self-esteem and quality of life due to perceptions of the eye symptoms caused by the disease, such as bulging eyes, redness, and eyelid swelling.
An annual US survey by Health Union revealed that 54% of sufferers admitted to consequent anxiety, 53% had low confidence and 44% cited a negative impact on mental health.
Additionally, 42% of respondents said their condition contributed to poor social life or relationships with friends, and three in 10 said it impacted family relationships.
Olivier Chateau, Health Union’s co-founder and CEO, said there was a need for resources where people impacted by the condition can gather information and connect with others who understand their experiences.
