TikTok trend stops tears in their tracks

Optician’s clinical editor of optometry, Manbir Nagra, has warned against following a trend on TikTok that involved putting Vaseline in the eyes.

The ‘hack’ supposedly stopped eyes from watering in cold weather and helped keep make-up intact, and has been shared widely on social media.

Nagra said that watery eyes could be indicative of several eye conditions and it was best to speak to an eye care professional who could help diagnose the problem and provide advice on management.

‘The Vaseline trend seems to be the latest in a long line of eye-related health ‘hacks’. As eye care professionals, perhaps we need to learn more about why people are turning to social media for health advice instead of seeking professional opinions,’ Nagra said.
