Time to test drivers' vision

The Guild of Experienced Motorists has said the reintroduction of National Health Service eye examinations for the over-60s is not sufficient to solve the problem of people driving with defective vision.

Chief executive David Williams said that the Guild remained concerned about drivers with defective eyesight. 'We have been campaigning for more than two decades for compulsory vision tests for all drivers. Research has shown that more than 10 per cent, around 3.4 million drivers, fail to meet current legal standards,' he said The Guild has called on the Government to introduce legislation to ensure all new applicants for a driving licence have written confirmation from an optometrist that their vision is adequate for driving. The Guild has also called for motorists to be required to undergo regular vision checks.
