Multifocal contact lenses have to be among the most useful, but overlooked, optical products out there. Alongside the established concentric ring designs offering options for centre near or centre distance new designs using the extended depth of focus (EDOF) principle have emerged. EDOF employs a virtual pinhole effect based around a range of optical designs for presbyopes and myopia control. Markennovy EDOF lens was one of the EDOF designs being shown at last year’s British Contact Lens Association meeting and is aimed at presbyopes.
As a keen multifocal contact lens wearer I was expecting some compromise of vision, either near or far, but found the Markennovy EDOF to perform very well at both distances in static situations. In everyday use the Markennovy design, in common with other EDOF lenses, takes some getting used to in terms of the transition of focus from near to far and back. I did find this lens performed better than other EDOF lenses I have tried but was sometimes left blinking. Poor light remains the multifocal contact lenses’ nemesis with near and far vision reduced as the light faded. Markennovy has a comfortable and effective lens in EDOF which would be improved by a tint and a slightly higher modulus to aid handling.
