Tried and tested: Tweaking a multifocal lens

Contact lenses
Can the compromises needed to suit all uses always result in a single option?

Multifocal contact lenses are a wow product when fitted effectively but can the compromises needed to suit all uses always result in a single option?

I am a satisfied, if occasional, Alcon Dailies Total1 Multifocal wearer. My last fitting resulted in L:-1.25, R:-0.75 with medium adds, this was a conscious choice to favour office wear and for intensive close work such as proof-reading. However, on days out of the office, for activities such as sports, the distance vision was adequate but felt a compromise.

Following a conversation around this topic during spectacle consultation at David Clulow in Wigmore Street I was invited by optometrist Tessa Forde to return for a multifocal contact lens tweak to my prescription favouring outdoor activities. After some thorough questioning, eye dominance check and a few flipper tests Forde considered the options. This eventually determined that moving to a -1.00 lens in the right eye would give that outdoor clarity without losing too much of the near vision.
