Tried & Tested: Guy goes fog free

Simon Jones reviews his time with the Kirk & Kirk Guy frame, as well as the Hoya Clear-it anti-fog cloth

This week’s Tried & Tested has a bit of a problem-solving theme (hear me out). I have been long-time admirer of Kirk & Kirk’s eyewear collections, but there hasn’t been ‘the one’ for me. As someone who generally wears frames with eye size of 55 or larger, there hadn’t been a frame in the brand’s range that fitted perfectly. So, when company managing director Jason Kirk told me there were two new additions to the Centena range that met the needs of my generously proportioned head, I had to give one of them a go.

The model I tried was Guy, a handsome, large (59-17) pilot-style shape with modern angled corners constructed from a 10mm thick plate of acrylic. The use of acrylic has a number of benefits, but in such a wide and voluminous frame, the most obvious was the light weight. It was never going feel like a rimless frame, but it had all-day comfort in spades. The frame was well balanced and even when with poly-carb -4.0D lenses, there was very little pressure on the nose – helped significantly by the design of the bridge, which uses nearly the whole depth of the 10mm plate. The Jade colouration is punchy and has a glass-like look, which once more is thanks to the highly polished acrylic.
