A new optometry degree has been launched at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) after receiving GOC approval.
The course is an integrated Masters in Optometry (MSci Optometry), which is the first of its kind. It will combine blended learning with online and classroom teaching, as well as work-based practical experience.
To apply for the course, students need to have worked in a practice for at least one year. Throughout the five year course, students will be required to spend one week out of four at the UCLan’s Preston Campus to learn clinical and practical skills.
The MSci Optometry course will focus on ophthalmic dispensing, standards of practice, management of vision and eye abnormalities and leadership. It will be a fast track programme, with students able to leave after two years once they receive a BSc (Hons) Ophthalmic Dispensing qualification. The final three years will include a pre-reg year as well as a master’s research project.
